Vacation... Long Version: Chapter Seven

Chapter 7: Friday September 13, 2013

Today, we were going on a very exciting road trip to somewhere I've never been before…Niagara Falls!

We woke up around 8am to get ready, then loaded the car with our bags and snacks, and were out on the road by 9am.

Our first stop was actually a surprise…my uncle and aunt took us to Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, NY. The place is unlike any bakery I have even been to; it’s more of a factory where you get to see how bread is made. For me, it was as if I had stumbled into heaven! I am a bread addict, and I'm proud! I love bread, ever since I was little, bread has always been my favorite food ever…it still is. I can practically eat bread all day and never get tired of it. I have a picture of myself when I was probably 3 years old holding onto a baguette and biting into another one. So you can imagine how excited I was to be in this bread heaven.

At the entrance of the factory part of the bakery, you get gloves and a bag, and you are free to roam around the bakery choosing any kind of bread you’re in the mood for…So each one of us grabbed a bag, and set about choosing our delicious breads for the 6 hour drive up to Niagara Falls.
I wanted to buy the entire store…however, I settled for 3 or 4 different kinds, one of which was a really hot bagel fresh out of the oven!
There are rows and rows of different kinds of bread all over the factory and different machines baking all kinds of yummy bread, and you can see the entire process from dough to bread!

What’s also nice about this place is that it has a deli inside where you get to choose food to go with the bread. They have all kinds of cheeses, spread and a cold cuts section. We got cream cheese to spread on our delicious bread and were back on our way to Niagara Falls.

It was a really long drive…but the scenery was amazing. All trees and green grass lined the highway from the minute we left until we reached our destination.

At Syracuse, we took a break at a rest area for lunch. My uncle, aunt and N each ordered from McDonalds, while I was craving pizza and wings…luckily the rest area had a place to satisfy my craving. After getting our food, we got back into the car and continued our journey.

The weather was a bit gloomy and rainy…and I ended up falling asleep for most of the drive…

Around 4:30 or 5 we arrived to our destination…on the way we could see the mist coming out of the falls and couldn't wait till we actually see the falls.

Our first stop was the Hampton Inn hotel where we will be staying for two nights. The hotel was nice, the room and the bathroom were both spacious. Beds were really comfy and big. We got connecting rooms; my uncle and aunt in one room, and N and I in the other.
One of the great things about this hotel is the complementary in room wi-fi… this made our day! N and I can actually check-in on Facebook!

Anyway, after resting for an hour or so; my uncle took N and I to walk around the area….sadly it was practically deserted! It was very cold…and there was no one around. Most placed were abandoned and closed for good which saddened me, because this was a touristic area. It was a beautiful area, with streets only for pedestrians…but unfortunately, there appeared to be no pedestrians walking around except for us and very few people.

After walking for around 20 minutes, we reached Niagara Falls State Park. It was still light outside, but the skies were grey. We went up to the observation deck and the minute I saw the falls I was amazed! I was stunned at the beauty of the falls…the way the water was rushing over the edge and falling into the river…you look up and see the mist looking like a cloud high above the falls, and you feel the water droplets on your skin. Despite it being freezing outside on the observation deck, I never wanted to leave…After almost freezing to death, we walked back to the hotel to get ready for the night.

We decided to have dinner at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel. We were asking the casino security about the location of a steak restaurant when a sweet old man approached us and recommended to try the buffet. So we did just that..

We entered the restaurant and we were greeted with the biggest buffet ever! Every cuisine you can ever imagine was there…from Italian to French and Mediterranean, Asian, American, seafood…I filled my plate up from almost everything…but unfortunately, I was full from all the bread we had on the way…so I barely ate…but the small portion I actually ate was delicious!

After we were done with dinner, we went to the casino to try our luck…but I was not lucky…I lost money that night, yet we still had another night and I was determined to win it all back.
We spent around two hours at the casino before we deiced to go back to the hotel and get a good night’s sleep!

Stay tuned to find out what we did the next day at Niagara Falls…
